No such thing as a skin miracle.

Hello again!

Today we are going to discuss how skin miracles don't happen.

In my years of doing Esthetics, I have seen a trend:

People expect miracles. Miracles as in, expecting results after just one visit... ONE VISIT to their Esthetician.

I'm going to be honest with you... that just isn't going to happen.

I've received complaints, moans and groans about how after having only two or three microdermabrasion sessions that they (the client) just aren't seeing any results, therefore they go somewhere else, which I'm sure will run into the same problem and will end thinking that either getting facials, peels or microdermabrasions are akin to snake oil and will give up altogether.

Another complaint I hear all too often: "I wasn't even red after my facial. You're not giving me the full treatment if my skin isn't red."

Let me educate ya'll...

Firstly, any sane Esthetician is not going to go for the gusto and pump up their Micro machine to the max and use the coarsest grit diamond tip they have and go to town on your face your first visit OR slap on a few layers of chemical peel the first go around.

When going in for a procedure such as Microdermabrasion or a chemical peel or any other exfoliation method for that matter, you WILL get the lightest setting on a micro machine or will receive one layer of chemical peel (after receiving a patch test prior to receiving said peel). Period. End of story.

Why?

Firstly, and honestly, for us Esthi's , we CYA (cover your @$$) and secondly, because we don't know how your skin will react and thirdly, its best practice to build you up to the big guns.

What if you came in and I turned the vacuum up all the way and put a coarse grit tip on the wand of the micro machine and went to town and when all is said and done, your face is RED, your face is raw and tore up and have to live like a vampire for a few weeks in result of that?

What do you think will happen?

You'll call me insanely angry because you look like you were in a bar fight and lost to a crazed cat who had a go at your face. And will probably demand a refund and report me to state board and give me one star reviews on any and all review sites that you can find, not to mention your face may be scarred.

It's best to build up a tolerance. Gradually turn up the power and change diamond tips on the micro machine each time you visit. And/or add more layers of peel each visit.

This ensures your safety. We (estheticians) want to make sure you get fantastic results, SAFELY.

As Spiderman's Uncle Ben once said:

With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility.

Or... what he should have said "With great skin, comes great responsibility."

That goes for you and me.

Fantastic skin, free of sun damage, acne, fine lines & wrinkles doesn't happen after getting just one session of whatever your Esthetician thinks is best for you. It takes time, commitment, patience... AND CONSISTENCY. Coming in every so often is not going to help get rid of your sun damage. You must come in at the recommended times your Esthetician suggests, other wise you're pretty much starting from square one each time you come in once every few months.

Trust me; it doesn't pay to be impatient. Many Estheticians (myself included) have lost a handful of impatient clients because they aren't getting the results they feel they should be getting and have found another practitioner that will do what they say and will go gung ho on their face without a care of the outcome, which usually isn't what the client had in mind; see reference to angry cat bar fight above.

Results may vary.

Everybody's skin is different. Some clients, after about six sessions of peels, or micro's or even micro peels, will get the results they desired.

But some clients don't. I see this more with Hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. Hyperpigmentation is tricky. It has memory, and depending on how deep it goes, I can treat you with everything in my arsenal and it won't budge... same goes with wrinkles. Usually when that happens I refer the client over to a Dermatologist or their friendly neighborhood plastic surgeon.

Also, following a good home regimen will aid in your end game of beautiful skin. When we tell you to throw away the St. Ives face scrub or the rodan and fields crap, we mean it. The product recommendations we give you is strongly advised. If you choose not to get the products we think you should have, it will impede or slow down how fast your skin results show up.

I know, I know. It's expensive. But your skin is an investment that your future self will most definitely thank your past self for.

So, that is my two cents on the matter. This is a pretty short blog post... but I hope it explains as to why you won't have snapchat filter skin after just one or two visits to your local Esthetician.
